Gardner Village Blog Visit The Mercantile at Gardner Village
Thursday May 15 2025

“Look for the old yellow house.” That’s the name The Mercantile is often known as to those in the area who love the antiques/consignment scene. By any name, this shop is a delight. It’s easy to see why those who shop AND sell on consignment find this to a favorite place to visit. Here are just a few reasons this place is special:

1. At The Mercantile, stories matter. Becky, the shop’s new owner, encourages those who sell here to share glimpses into their lives and the why behind what they do. It's a lovely reminder about why buying local is so worthwhile. These are our friends and neighbors, sharing their antique finds, handcrafted designs, and other unique goods. Supporting them is made all the better when you can read about why they do what they do.

Interested in selling at The Mercantile. Stop by and fill out an application. They’re looking for unique merchandise that they don’t already carry. Vintage is always a big focus, as is local/handmade.

2. The Mercantile is full of heartfelt, handcrafted treasures. Many who sell at The Mercantile make their own inventory. From crocheted critters to handmade accessories, there are many original things waiting to be found!

3. The Mercantile is located in the heart of Gardner Village, which means it’s full of fairy fun this time of year! Year round, there are reasons to visit The Mercantile and enjoy seasonal celebrating, but the spring is a must. This shop is a key part of the Woodland Fairy Festival. You'll find the cutest assortment of items to make your own fairy garden at home. Plus, they have hand-crafted wands—just what any winged girl or boy needs! New this year, they even carry limited-edition Woodland Fairy Festival merchandise!

Here are a few things happening at The Mercantile during the Woodland Fairy Festival this spring:

  • Open an oyster, find a pearl, and add it to a fairy or dragon necklace.
  • Check out the unique fairy merch, including cool fairy lanterns.
  • Make a design-on-demand fairy t-shirt. You choose the shirt and colors and create an enchanting souvenir.
  • Grab a ribbon and hang it on the Wishing Bridge out front.

While these activities are scheduled for Fridays and Saturdays during the Woodland Fairy Festival, you’re welcome to stop in at any point during the weeks of the festival and partake.

4. It’s tea time at The Mercantile! They’re bringing back the magic of tea with fun weekly gatherings. Every Tuesday from 2-5pm you can stop by for a cuppa. For just $10, you get to choose a teacup and saucer to use at the affair. It even includes a spoon and a honey straw! No reservations are needed. Simply stop by anytime during this open-house format and sit for a sip. Not a tea fan? No problem. They also serve mock mimosas and hot chocolate. It’s a fun experience for all ages.

5. The Mercantile is full of heart! The owner, Becky, spends much of her time fostering doggies that have been rescued. She’s even been known to bring a pup in the shop from time to time to help it find a home.

She also allowed three birdies to take up residence in the birdhouses out front. They were originally for sale, but Becky didn't have the heart to evict Magpie, Mallory, and Meredith, so she decided to keep the houses just for them.

6. The Mercantile is a trip down Memory Lane. The employees love helping visitors find those special somethings . . . sometimes it’s a treasure they didn’t even realize they were looking for until they saw it on the shelf and were transported back. It brings the store team so much joy to share in those memories and hear your touching stories! It’s a wonderful way to jump back in time for a little bit.

7. The Mercantile is a prime spot for cool gifts. The store is a mix of old and new, consignment and shop owned, which means a great variety of presents just waiting to be discovered and shared.

When we asked Becky, who has a degree in nursing and master’s degree in genetic biology, if she had any regrets after leaving her decades-long career in healthcare to buy The Mercantile, she said:

“Zero regrets. Ever since I first saw You’ve Got Mail, I’ve dreamed about having my own shop. When this store became available, I decided it was time for an early retirement from my medical career and jumped at the chance. I’ve loved it!”

Stop by soon to meet Becky and see all the things that make the “old yellow house” (also known as The Mercantile) so special!
